breach. is a first-person 3D narrative game set in the early 2050’s, depicting a digitally-rich environment in which autonomy and freedom are traded for convenience. The narrative unfolds in a society where an invasive illness has infected over 80% of the global population, leading to vast unemployment rates, societal rejection, and cognitive decline, relying on ambient AI to operate.

 The story of breach. follows the main character, Alex, employed as a data analyst for BreachPoint, a group of media conglomerates who produce advanced machinery, designed to guide affected patients through daily life. As players progress through the three act structure of the narrative, the true relationship between E.L.I, not only their built-in AI caregiver but also human extension, and Alex is revealed. breach. is situated amongst many themes of technological overreliance, digital dementia and AI, in which the removal of decision-making and critical thinking diminish human autonomy. 

Through the exploration of this concept, breach. aims to challenge players into questioning their personal choices and connection regarding smart technology. The game also contributes to fields of persuasive design and dark patterns, in which player behaviour is subtly nudged to achieve a certain outcome.
